Traditional Shona beliefs (in common with much of the rest of Africa) held that twins were somehow dangerous to society as a whole, and they were often killed at birth. As society changed, due to the influence of urbanisation, globalisation and Christianity on Zimbabwean culture, this practice has died out and the arrival of twin children is now celebrated like any other healthy baby.

Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is an excellent sculpture medium, as it has a dense internal structure with very few flaws.
