Godfrey Kututwa was born in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. His education and subsequent work opportunities have been impeded due to his physical disabilities - he cannot speak and he is almost completely deaf.
Godfrey began sculpting when he was 21, encouraged by the well-respected artist Claud Nyanhongo. For several years Godfrey stayed with Claud as an informal apprentice. Since 1996, he has branched out on his own and has succeeded in creating his own name and style.
His subject matter is predominantly inspired by nature, particularly animals and birds. They have a pleasingly rounded form and beautifully defined faces.
Kututwa has found a means of expressing himself through sculpting. His work speaks eloquently of his closeness to nature and his awareness of traditional Shona culture and customs.
His work has been exhibited by many leading Shona sculpture galleries since the early 1990s; Godfrey also participated in international workshops in England and Holland.
