The desert plant folds itself inwards to protect itself against the sun. It goes a long time without flowering; when the rain does come, which is rare, the plant bursts into flower for a day and then it goes again.

Ishmael is one of the finest abstract sculptors of his generation; his fluid sculptures, with their crisp lines and perfect finishing, encapsulate the simplicity and grace of modern Zimbabwean sculpture.

Ishmael has chosen to sand and wax the entirety of this sculpture so we can enjoy the wonderful colours and textures within the stone.

'Fruit serpentine' is the local Zimbabwean name for a very colourful, slightly translucent variety of serpentine stone.
