The desert plant folds itself inwards to protect itself against the sun. It goes a long time without flowering; when the rain does come, which is rare, the plant bursts into flower for a day and then it goes again.

'Fruit serpentine' is the local Zimbabwean name for a very colourful, slightly translucent variety of serpentine stone.
