Jonathan's grandmother used to carry him on her shoulders until he was 13! His grandfather was against her carrying him on her back as is usual in Zimbabwe. This piece is a mother and child, but his thoughts were with his grandmother as he was sculpting it.
Jonathan was a new addition to our stable of famous artists last year and his work was very well received. It takes a lot to excite us these days, but we were very impressed with his extraordinary sculptures.
The composition is quietly self-contained and precisely sculpted and is just what you'd expect from a young artist who trained with the great Joseph Ndandarika and is already well-respected internationally.
