The water spirits live in deep lakes and rivers, and may lure the unwary person into the water. They are often portrayed as mermaids.

The water spirit or njuzu is a central belief in Shona mythology and is a recurring theme in Zimbabwean sculpture, and every artist has their own style of interpretation.

Fruit serpentine is the local Zimbabwean name for a very colourful, slightly translucent type of serpentine stone. It comes from Kwekwe and is of a similar hardness to the black serpentine known as springstone.
