Looking For Shelter
'Lemon Opal' Stone
Fluffed up against the cold, the bird is looking for somewhere warm and dry to shelter.
The shiny areas have been sanded, waxed and polished.
Peter then achieves the contrasting feathered effect by stroking the surface of the sculpture with a blunt rasp. This abrasion lightens the surface of the stone.
'Lemon opal' stone is the local Zimbabwean name for a bright green variety of serpentine stone. It is of a similar hardness to springstone (i.e. a lot harder than what is known as common opal stone, which scratches easily like soapstone). It does NOT contain opals, sorry. It's nice stone, but not that nice!
