By twisting its neck over its back, the bird can see what's going on behind it and whether there are any predators there.

The black shiny areas have been sanded, waxed and polished. Peter then achieves the feathered effect by stroking the surface of the sculpture with a blunt rasp. This abrasion lightens the surface of the stone, creating contrast in colour and texture.

Springstone is the local Zimbabwean name for a hard variety of serpentine stone. It has an even internal structure with very small grains; it is dense and has very few flaws, and is perfect for Peter's precise work.
