The Old Man
This is the first substantial sculpture we have had from Richard for a few years, and it is a very impressive piece.
The pared down style (the deep lines are done with a grinder) gives it a simplicity that is reminiscent of the art deco aesthetic. There is movement there, and a crisp contrast with the section of white textured stone created using a chasing hammer.
Even the stone itself is very unusual - a dappled dark grey-brown serpentine.
A piece this size (but not as nice) would be over £5,000 in a Cape Town gallery.
The stone has a couple of small superficial imperfections (please ask if you'd like us to send you higher resolution photos), and for that reason we recommend this piece should be for indoor display only. There are no structural implications, and it does not detract from the beauty of the piece.
