Richard Mupumha Jnr
Each leaf represents a family member; they are celebrating, jumping up and down together, waving their hands in the air in delight.
Richard creates abstract works that are heavily inspired by nature, as uses the forms as metaphor for human relationships.
The black surface stone is where the springstone has been sanded, waxed and polished; the contrasting white area is finished with parallel lines carefully sculpted using a narrow tungsten carbide chisel.
Springstone is the local name for a hard variety of serpentine stone. It has tiny grains with few flaws, enabling Richard to create elegant thin leaves coming to sharp points.
