Looking Into The Future
Five quail chicks together in a row. With their heads raised to they sky, they are looking up expectantly.
Royal made his name internationally with his lovely sculptures of quails. The stippling effect is achieved using a chasing hammer, which has little teeth, and hitting the stone with perfect precision over and over, almost like sculpture pointillism.
Springstone is the local name for a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor display.
Springstone is a particularly good sculpture medium, as it has a very even internal structure of small grains of rock, and is therefore perfect for Royal's detailed style of sculpting. It is the medium of choice for most of Zimbabwe's best-known artists.
