The front of the sculpture is an owl's head; the head is on its side and the two holes are eyes with the beak between them.

On the back, the upper circle is a head with the inner hole an eye; below is the body, and the curve of the stone on the right is the owl's wing.

The simplicity of the work encapsulates the best of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture, but also allows the beauty of the stone itself to come to the fore.

Cobalt stone is the local Zimbabwean name given to this type of serpentine, which is typically a mixture of purple and green. It does not, as far as we know, contain any cobalt.
