Stephen was Artist-in-Residence at the Rice Lake Gallery Summer Exhibition in Canada in 2012.
Stephen was born in 1982 in Rushinga, on Zimbabwe’s north-eastern border with Mozambique. He is one of six brothers, and it was his older brothers Julius and Rufaro Murenza who encouraged Stephen to join them in stone sculpting. As soon as he left school, he started working with his brothers full time.
In 2000 Stephen left his rural home for the city of Chitungwiza near Harare, where many of the most famous sculptors live and work. He now has outdoor studio space at a centre for young sculptors, where he works alongside his brother Rufaro.
Stephen’s work effortlessly combines the uncluttered feel of the best of Zimbabwe’s abstract sculpture with the precise detailed finishing of the best of Zimbabwe’s figurative work. He bridges the divide in styles with work of graceful elegance.
