In The Field
Charles Nkomo

Oil On Canvas

This piece is a commentary on gender-based division of labour in the rural areas of Zimbabwe (but it probably applies to most areas of Africa).

"When men and women go to the field, they do equal amounts of work; when they get home, the men rest but the women have to carry on working, preparing supper, washing etc. The boys rest with the men, and the girls help their mothers, so this pattern is continuing down through the generations. And of course, the women go to the fields more often then the men!"

Charles is a Bulawayan artist who now lives and works in Johannesburg. His work is shown by numerous galleries in South Africa.
