Matthew Zvondai
Matthew was born on the 10th of March 1957. At the age of 7, he started to carve under the instruction of his father, a former member of the Canon Paterson Craft Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. For ten years from 1973, he was a member at the Canon Paterson Craft Centre. After that, he spent five years carving ivory in Harare - each whole tusk could depict lots of small animals or one or two larger ones.
In 1989, he moved to Murehwa, in eastern Zimbabwe; he lived and sculpted there and showed his work in Harare.
In 1992, Matthew entered the Annual Mobil Heritage Exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (a prestigious annual art competition open to all Zimbabweans) and received an Award of Merit. He lived in Murehwa until 2000, when he joined the Chitungwiza Arts Centre. He became a friend of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 2001.
His work have been shown by various galleries in America, United Kingdom, Australia, Holland and Austria.
