Dreaming Water Spirit
Morgan Chijumani

Fruit Serpentine

Approx. height 21"

£450

The water spirits live in deep lakes and rivers, and may lure the unwary person into the water. Those who return from this experience are more likely to become shamen, as they have travelled between the physical and spiritual worlds. They are often portrayed as mermaids.

The water spirit or njuzu is a very popular theme in Zimbabwean sculpture and every artist has their own style of interpretation. Morgan's Water Girl is another version of the subject.

Fruit serpentine is the local name given to this very colourful and slightly translucent type of serpentine. It needs to be well-lit to bring out all the colour and detail in the stone.

Morgan works almost exclusively in fruit serpentine.
