Happy Family
Moulaye Sarr

Acrylic on canvas

2003

59.5cm (h)
50cm (w)

£ 275

The family is looking forward to a festival together - perhaps the end of Ramadan. They will sacrifice a sheep, and feast and dance together. They wear their best clothes, new jewellery and hairstyles because it is a special day.

The circles in the picture represent the family members, but they also reflect the large circular dishes from which the family and their guests eat together according to Gambian custom.
