Polygamy
Moulaye Sarr

Acrylic on canvas

2007

70cm (h)
54cm (w)

£250

"Polygamy in Africa is an advantage to the women in the sense that they are not overloaded by the domestic work that is exclusively the role of women in African society.

"But nowadays most educated women are fighting against it, considering it as a challenge that is imposed by husbands to enable competition between the spouses. That is the reason why most of the educated polygamous women are fighting to have separated homes."

Interesting to hear the male justification for polygamy and a rather limited understanding of why a woman might not view it as an ideal arrangement.
