The Burden Of Beauty
Norbert Shamuyarira Springstone 88cm (h) 24cm (w) 41cm (d) 41kg SOLD An amused comment on the lengths to which some people will go for their looks, the burden they are prepared to shoulder. In this case, it is literal as well as metaphorical - the weight of hair that a woman has cultivated. She doesn't want to cut it off because it looks so beautiful and attracts so many stares, but it is a burden in respect of the time it takes to keep it looking good as well as its weight on her neck. The textured hair, which seems both solid and hollow, is such a powerful and attractive part of this work. It is beautifully balanced by the elegant curve of the smooth neck. Norbert is a welcome new addition to Guruve's stable of sculptors this year. |
