Spirit of Buru
(The Bull Elephant)

Peter Gwisa

Springstone

111cm (h)
42cm (w)
20cm (d)

47kg

SOLD

The twists at the bottom are the elephant's ears; the top twists form the raised trunk; behind is a human body - this person is very brave and has the spirit and inner strength of a male elephant or buru in Shona.

Peter was one of four finalists in the 8th NAMA (National Arts Merit Awards) competition. His entry earned a Special Mention, suggesting he missed being the winner by the tightest of margins.

Springstone is frost-resistant and is suitable for outdoor display. The brown colouration comes from the oxidisation (weathering) of the iron in the serpentine before it was sculpted.
