Baby Stork

SOLD

A 'classic' Richard Mteki sculpture of one of his favourite subjects, the black stork.

The black stork is a seasonal visitor to Zimbabwe, and arrives when the rains are due. Understandably, it is a traditional symbol of good luck as both land and people are thirsty by the end of the dry season. To make matters worse, Zimbabwe has suffered a series of droughts in recent decades.

Springstone is the local name for a hard variant of serpentine stone. It is a particularly good sculpture medium, as it has a very even internal structure of small grains of rock; it is dense and has very few flaws. This piece is from a mine which has emerald-green veins in the stone.
