Royal achieves the feathered effect by striking the surface of the sculpture with a chasing hammer (which has little teeth).

It takes great skill to place the hammer blows in neat rows, judging the tiny change in position with tremendous accuracy every time.

The contrasting finish of the eyes and beaks is achieved by sanding the springstone and then applying clear wax.
