This piece is on loan to an exhibition at Exbury Gardens until July.

Royal made his name internationally with his lovely sculptures of quails. The stippling effect is achieved using a claw hammer or a punch, which hits the stone many times, almost like sculpture pointilism.

His work has been (poorly) imitated by roadside carvers but this exceptional piece was bought from him in person at his studio and is beautifully finished.
