Baby Chapungu
Sylvester Mubayi Lepidolite 19cm (h) 17cm (w) 7cm (d) 3kg £ 995 "The chapungu (fish eagle) is a very important bird in Zimbabwe. You are not allowed to kill them; you have to look after them because there are very few left. Fish eagles act as guides and warn travellers when there are lions about." It is very special for Sylvester to sculpt chapungu, because they were the first things sculpted by the Shona people. There is a chapungu sculpted into the top of the doorposts in the stone ruins at Great Zimbabwe from 12th - 14th centuries. Plus he grew up in the rural areas and knows the nature of these birds. This is a very collectable piece by the greatest living Zimbabwean sculptor. Lepidolite is a mineral of the mica group, containing lithium. For the geologists among you, find out more here. This stone came from Bikita, one of two sources in Zimbabwe. Bride by Richard Mteki is made from lepidolite from the other mine, which is a deeper purple. |
