Sylvester Mubayi

Springstone

£ 1,995

"When a ceremony is performed and libations poured, the spirits still possess people, including children. This is a boy who the rhino spirit is talking through."

Traditional Shona beliefs and customs are much more central in the lives of the older generation of Zimbabwean sculptors, compared to the more urban younger artists whose influences are as likely to come from TV and pop culture. Sylvester prides himself as a storyteller, someone who is a living repository of Shona values. A piece like this is as much social history as art, and is very moving for it.
