I'm Looking After You

An older child looks after a younger child.

African cultures excel at creating responsible well-behaved children, and Shona society is no exception. It is one of the biggest differences compared with the West, that small children taking care of even smaller children is normal and unproblematic.

Rather than suggesting a traumatic story of hardship and struggle (two orphans perhaps), Sylvester is merely articulating the everyday through his sculpture - a portrait of the relationship between happy siblings.

Springstone is the local name for a hard variant of serpentine stone. It is the favoured medium for Zimbabwe's most famous sculptors.
