Mother Buck Protecting The Baby
Sylvester Mubayi

Springstone

31cm (h)
50cm (w)
15cm (d)

16kg

£3,200

The mother buck protects her baby because it seems everything eats baby impala, including man. Sometimes if a predator comes, she will run away as a decoy and leave the baby hidden in the bushes. When the predator has gone, she comes back to find her little one safe and sound.

Sylvester is a keen hunter and makes a trip every Christmas to the north of Zimbabwe to shoot an impala or two (as he says, there's plenty). Like most hunters, though, he reveres the prey and values the buck for the life it gives to sustain the life of man.

Springstone is the local name for a hard variant of serpentine stone. It is the favoured medium for Zimbabwe's most famous sculptors.

Rather than our words though, why not watch Sylvester speaking about his sculpture...
