'Butter Jade' is the local name for this beautiful stone. It is similar in hardness to flint, but has a layered appearance. It is pale green interspersed with layers of cream and grey, speckled with black.

It is very expensive as a raw material, so it is not often seen, particularly in pieces of this size. It is also very difficult to work, so only very determined sculptors use it, but with what beautiful results.

It is not jade.
