Preaching Head
Tanyanyiwa Nyandoro Cobalt Stone 52cm (h) 27cm (w) 17cm (d) £275 Tanya is one of the most abstract artists we show. This piece represents the head of a preacher, with most of the face taken up with a large mouth. Although he believes in God, Tanya is under no illusions as regards the proliferation of different churches in Africa and the hollow promises made by their priests. Tanyanyiwa gave a wry smile at the suggestion that it did little more than give hope in difficult times - in fact, he suggested most of the new churches are set up to enrich their heads. So much cynicism in one so young! Cobalt stone is the local Zimbabwean name given to this predominantly purple type of serpentine. It is mined near Chiweshe, in northern Zimbabwe. |
