A mother is so proud of her daughter. She has brought her up to be respectful and well behaved. The child stands in her mother’s protective embrace, and her mother gazes down adoringly.
The strong relationship between mother and child is a common theme that Zimbabwean sculptors return to time and time again, emphasising the importance of family bonds in Zimbabwean social structure, but Cloppas’ treatment of the subject matter here is fresh and sympathetic. A lovely piece!
Cloppas is a new addition to Guruve’s collection of Zimbabwean sculptors this year. We were very impressed with his stylish works, paring down the human form until it is almost abstract.
Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is suitable for outdoor display, as it is dense and impermeable and has very few flaws that might be exacerbated by frost action. The green lines in the stone are natural veins and are not lines of weakness.
