The little girl is so eager to be able to read, because she has seen her older sister reading her books. The big sister takes time out to start teaching her younger sibling, so she will have a head start at school.

So many African children desperately want to go to school and do well, to please their parents, because they know their parents have struggled to find the school fees.

Jonathan has used various different sculpting techniques on this sculpture – he has created the hairstyle and the patterned dresses freehand with a tungsten carbide chisel. The black areas have been sanded, heated, waxed and polished. This sculpture has been made from a single piece of stone.

Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone with very few flaws, and is therefore an excellent sculpture medium.
