“A teenage girl listening to what she is being told.”
Men of Sylvester’s generation place great importance on children being well behaved and respectful, and the moulding of young women to behave demurely in the way Shona society expects. The perfect young wife (muroora) is not only plump and pretty, but also the humble servant of the husband’s family. It’s not all bad though – by the time she is grandmother (ambuya) of a large family, all power rests with her. All good things come to those who wait!
This is a nice investment piece by the greatest living Zimbabwean sculptor. Sylvester represented Zimbabwe at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
