This sculpture is being offered for sale on behalf of a private collector. It is located in the USA and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
This lovely example of Matemera’s work was purchased from Gallery Shona (which later became Chapungu Sculpture Village) by the current owner’s family in 1988, when they visited Zimbabwe to acquire pieces for their gallery in New York, called the Hayden Gallery. The current owner has various items of paperwork relating to this buying trip, including a pro forma invoice from Gallery Shona which includes ‘Blind Boy’. Copies will be provided to the buyer.
This piece is Hayden Gallery’s reference number 235. The original Hayden Gallery catalogue photo of Blind Boy accompanies the piece, along with a photo of the piece in the gallery.
It is in very good condition, as the current owner has recently done a super restoration.
The piece is signed on the base. Dimensions in inches 55” x 18” x 24”.
Please note the stone is a dark brown; some of the photos have a lot of green reflection from the surroundings. The wedges are there because of the unevenness of the top of the tree stump.
Guruve are delighted to be able to show a genuine work by Bernard Matemera, whose pieces have (sadly) become subject to copying since his death.
We only show works we are convinced are genuine. We strongly advise collectors to acquire proper provenance for their pieces wherever possible, such as a photo of the artist with the piece or original gallery documentation dating back to the original purchase from the artist, and to archive them for posterity as it greatly adds to the value and saleability of an artwork.
