This sculpture is a tremendous example of the work of the late great Bernard Matemera. It would be a fantastic addition to any Shona sculpture collection. We love it!
It is being offered for sale on behalf of a private collector, whose parents bought this sculpture directly from Bernard in Zimbabwe around 1997. The seller has a couple of photos of her parents with Bernard, and will provide copies with the piece.
The current owner’s parents spent a lot of time in Zimbabwe in the 1980s and 1990s. They made films about Shona sculpture and organised exhibitions in Denmark and Germany.
The sculpture is in excellent condition for its age, and has clearly been well looked after. The end of one finger had suffered minor damage and has been repaired – photos available on request.
We have not inspected this sculpture in person. However, we are entirely satisfied with the description of its condition and its authenticity. This is based on the information and photos provided to us by the seller. We will provide a certificate of authenticity for the piece to the buyer. Bernard has signed it on the base.
It is located in Copenhagen, Denmark and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
