This is a lovely medium-sized stone sculpture by the most influential artist of the ‘second generation’ of internationally recognised Shona sculptors from Zimbabwe, Brighton Sango. Guruve is advertising it for sale on behalf of a third party.

The back of the figure shows the folded wings, and instantly it becomes clear to the viewer that we are looking at an angel, bringing a message to earth-bound mortals. Christianity has a strong hold in Zimbabwe, where it sits alongside and sometimes in contradiction to traditional Shona beliefs. Here, it provides Brighton with inspiration for a very interesting work.

It has a much more figurative style than the majority of his late works (this piece dates from just four years before his death), and harks back to much earlier works. The detailing of the face is exquisite and shows how talented a sculptor he was.

This sculpture was originally purchased from Brighton Sango in person by the current owner’s brother; he journeyed out to Guruve district in northern Zimbabwe to visit the artist in his home, way back in 1992. Delightfully, the seller has a photo taken on that day of Brighton with the sculpture and the original list of sculptures purchased, written in Brighton’s hand. The original photo also shows the date, and photo and list will be included with the sculpture as the perfect provenance.

The sculpture is deeply inscribed on the base with Brighton’s characteristic signature ‘SANGO’.

We have not seen the sculpture, it being on the other side of the world (!), but Guruve are sure this is an original work by one of our favourite and most admired sculptors from Zimbabwe’s Shona sculpture movement.  The piece has a couple of very minor marks, but overall it is in excellent condition for its age.

This sculpture is in Australia and will be shipped from there; postage and packing at buyer’s expense. All reasonable offers considered.
