“In life, we face challenges which [could] force us to do bad things; but if we continue doing good things, the rewards will come back to us.”

So in this piece, the lines going sideways are challenges – but they lead upwards, so at the end you will be on top of the situation.

This is a one-off sculpture, signed by the artist. It would be great for a central focal point, as it has interest from every angle. As with all his pieces, Charles has sculpted it from a single piece of stone.

Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is dense and impermeable, and rarely has any flaws. As a result, it is perfect for sculpting, especially pieces such as this where the artist removes much of the stone to create ‘negative space’.

This variety, with a speckling of paler stone crystals, comes from the Impinge pass through the Great Dyke in northern Zimbabwe. The crystals are even harder than the rest of the stone, so they resist the sandpaper. As a result, the surface of this sculpture has a slightly textured feel that is lovely to touch.
