This distinctive sculpture of a traditional healer or herbalist (n’anga in Shona) is a fantastic example of Edward Chiwawa‘s work.
It is being advertised for sale by Guruve on behalf of a private collector.
This piece was originally bought directly from Edward in early 1990 by the respected Matombo Gallery of Harare, Zimbabwe. Edward was one of the last surviving members of the so-called ‘first generation’ of artists of the Shona sculpture movement until he died in October 2022.
Matombo exported it to the UK for exhibition and sale at the London Art Fair in March 1990. Subsequently, it was exhibited at Westbourne Gallery and at ‘Shona Creations’, Exoticus Gallery, London (Mar 1993). In August 1995, it was purchased by a private collector. It has remained in this private collection until being offered for sale via Guruve.
The sculpture is in excellent condition, with just a couple of minor scuffs. Full Matombo paperwork accompanies the piece. Detailed provenance gives the collector great peace of mind when investing in major artworks, and this lovely piece is well supported.
This piece is in the UK and will be shipped from there;
P&P at buyer’s expense.
