This charming sculpture is by Edward Chiwawa, who was one of the most popular artists of Zimbabwe’s Shona sculpture movement. The support and protection of a loving family has been an enduring theme in Edward’s work. He had thirteen children, forty grandchildren and has lost count of the great-grandchildren!
It is being offered for sale on behalf of a private collector.
The prestigious Matombo Gallery in Harare purchased this sculpture directly from Edward back in 2001. Matombo included it in a group exhibition at Torbay Abbey in Devon, UK in June 2001. In July 2001, it was consigned to Coombe Farm Gallery in South Devon. There it remained until July 2009, when it was purchased by the current owner.
Edward has signed it on the base. It has been fully restored by Guruve and is in perfect condition. A letter of provenance from the seller and a certificate of authenticity accompanies the piece.
It is located in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
