Becoming a grandparent marks entry into the third, and most senior, stage of life in Shona society. Of course, a man delights in his first male grandchild.

No-one can greet you properly, respectfully, as a senior person until you become a grandparent – sekuru for a man and ambuya for a woman.

These are common themes in Zimbabwean sculpture, as many artists lean on Shona culture and mythology for their inspiration.

Edward has signed it on the base.

This colourful stone is a variety of serpentine. All the colouration in the stone is entirely natural, enhanced by the application of a layer of clear wax.
