Fanizani Akuda

Sculptor

The man’s head is tipped to the side, to show he is listening intently.

This charming sculpture is a lovely example of the work of the late Fanizani Akuda; his quirky style is instantly recognisable. It would make a great addition to any budding Shona sculpture collection.

Guruve is offering Listening Man for sale on behalf of a private collector who acquired it in 2014, from a gallery in Zimbabwe. A certificate of authenticity from the Harare gallery (and also one from Guruve) accompany the piece.

Although we don’t know exactly when it was made, we can be fairly certain this is a pretty early piece from Fanizani. It probably dates to the mid-1970s. We are basing this on the unusual reddish-purple stone, which is not used by contemporary sculptors.

We have carried out a full restoration of this piece, so it is in perfect pristine condition.

This sculpture is in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.

Imperial measurements are:
12.6″ (h) x 5.7″ (w) x 4.3″ (d) and 14.3lbs.
