This delightful sculpture is by Henry Munyaradzi, Zimbabwe’s most sought-after sculptor. It has the sharply defined circular eyes and straight nose and brow that are his trademark. It’s a quintessential example of the master’s work, and would be a great addition to any Shona sculpture collection. It is being advertised for sale by Guruve on behalf of a private collector.
The water beetle is dark and round and spins around in the water. Henry is famed for capturing the essence of the nature of his subject matter in the simplest of forms.
Water Beetle was purchased directly from the artist in Zimbabwe in 1996 by the owner of ‘African Heritage’, a gallery in Hong Kong. The current owner bought it from African Heritage in the late 1990s whilst living in Hong Kong.
The sculpture is in very good condition for its age, with just a few minor scuffs – these can be restored if the buyer requests.
The underside of the sculpture has a round cylindrical base, which lifts the edges off the ground by about a centimetre. This enables it to spin, like a water beetle, and also prevents the round edges from getting damaged. Henry’s signature is deeply incised into the underside of the sculpture – photos available on request. An original certificate from Henry bearing his signature accompanies the piece.
Detailed provenance gives the collector great peace of mind when investing in major artworks, and this lovely piece is well supported.
