This striking sculpture is an abstract representation of a cat’s head. So, the holes are the eyes, and the points at the top are its ears. Its head is cocked, as if listening for prey.
A very elegant medium-sized sculpture by one of Zimbabwe’s best young artists. His work is wonderfully abstract, mixing confident sweeping lines with dramatic combinations of angles and curves. We can go so far as to say that Ishmael’s sculptures encapsulate the simplicity and grace of modern Zimbabwean sculpture.
Lepidolite is a mineral of the mica group, containing lithium. This stone comes from Bikita, one of just two sources in Zimbabwe. It’s an extremely hard type of stone, and is absolutely fine for outdoor display. All colouration and texture within the stone is entirely natural; indeed, Ishmael has sensibly decided to sand and wax the entire sculpture so we can enjoy the beauty of the stone itself.
