“They are the same age group, talking the same stories. They are adolescents discussing teenage issues.”

Jonathan trained with the late, great Joseph Ndandarika and he is already well-respected internationally. His charming sculptures of children are particularly sought-after by collectors.

Jonathan’s confidence as a sculptor shines through here, with his use of various different sculpting techniques. He has created the hairstyles and the patterned dresses freehand with tools such as rasps and tungsten carbide chisels.

Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone with very few flaws, and is therefore an excellent sculpture medium. This sculpture has been made from a single piece of stone. When an artist sands, heats, waxes and polishes the springstone, it turns a shiny black. The stone in its natural form is a pale charcoal grey.
