Jonathan achieves the shiny surfaces by sanding them smooth, then applying wax and polishing them to a shine. By contrast, he uses a file to create the rough matt white texture of her hair.
Lepidolite is a mineral of the mica group, containing lithium. This variety of lepidolite, from the mine in Bikita – one of just two sources in Zimbabwe – is a lovely shade of lilac. Interestingly, we also have another sculpture by Jonathan from this year’s collection in the darker lepidolite from the other mine, in Mutoko.
