Joe Mutasa

Sculptor

In this lovely elegant sculpture, in Joe Mutasa’s quintessential style, the lady with the chiselled lips and high cheekbones gazes wistfully into space as she thinks about her lover, now they are apart.

Joe has carefully inlaid the detail of her necklace with ground up powdered dolomite marble to give the contrasting white embedded within the black springstone, providing an unusual and special feature in this work.

Joe Mutasa is one of the best-known names in the ‘second generation’ of Zimbabwean sculptors. His contemporaries include Dominic Benhura and Royal Katiyo. Joe’s work is collected worldwide and his pieces are highly sought after. This is a super example of his style.

Springstone is the local name for a very hard variety of serpentine stone. It is suitable for outdoor display, as it is dense and impermeable and has very few flaws that might be exacerbated by frost action. It is the favoured medium for many Zimbabwe’s most famous sculptors, as it has small grains and an even internal structure that enables sharp and lasting definition.
