Famous second-generation Zimbabwean sculptor Joe Mutasa with one of his sculptures

Joe Mutasa

Sculptor

Joe says he saw the thin band of hard pale stone that runs around the head (within the hair) when he was working on the stone, and decided to leave it and make it into a feature. Hence the title, Natural Beauty, as the features within the stone dictated how the sculpture turned out.

Joe Mutasa is one of Shona sculpture’s best-known ‘second generation’ sculptors. His work is collected worldwide and his pieces are highly sought after. He is particularly well-known for the precisely chiselled elegant features of his beautiful ladies, and this is a super example of his quintessential style.

We named this hard variety of serpentine stone ‘avocado’, due to its interesting green and yellow colouration. The colours in the stone are entirely natural, enhanced by the application of a coat of clear wax. It is impermeable and frost-resistant; therefore it is suitable for display outdoors.

The piece is in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
