Zimbabwean Shona artist John Takawira

This is a genuine work by John Takawira being sold by a private collector through Guruve.

The current owner acquired the piece at auction, and there is no provenance – unfortunately its history has been lost.

The sculpture is of a bird with a prominent crest soaring in the sky – and the best candidate for John’s inspiration is the hamerkop, a prehistoric-looking bird that specialises in catching fish and is indigenous to Zimbabwe. So the current owner has given it its title.

The stone is a kind of bright green stone known as verdite, rich in chrome, which is highly prized by Zimbabwean sculptors for its beauty and hardness.

We have recently restored the piece, so it is in excellent condition. It is signed J TAKK (or possibly J TAKA) on the base.

The piece is in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
