Sculptor

“When the king speaks, everyone must listen.”

This impressive sculpture is a king’s head. The top part is a big eye, to watch over his people. A large mouth at the bottom shows he has a powerful voice so his commands will be heard and obeyed.

Such a gorgeous piece of stone, with fascinating internal colouration. Munyaradzi’s clean lines and smooth surfaces allow us to appreciate the beauty of the material.

All colouration and patterning within the stone is entirely natural, enhanced by the application of a coat of clear wax.

This stone is a type of ‘leopard rock’ serpentine; it’s most commonly a pale yellow-green with black spots, hence the name. This particular variety, with its complex internal patterning, comes from near the town of Guruve in northern Zimbabwe. It is very hard and impermeable, which makes it suitable for outdoor display, even in temperate climates.

The lines you can see are part of the internal structure of the stone – they are not cracks or lines of weakness.
