Flexible Thinking

Leopard Rock (Serpentine)

At face value, the form shows someone bending over, doing their exercises. The top hole is their head, and the stone encircling the hole is their arms. Additionally,

“flexible thinking is when you move around a problem”

so the movement of the sculpture represents flexibility when presented with obstacles.

The stone itself is full of subtle colour and pattern. Nesbert has sanded the surface until it is smooth and beautiful to touch.

Overall, this is a really lovely sculpture by one of the top contemporary artists from the Shona sculpture movement. It’s balanced and elegant, simple in form but complex in meaning, and rewarding to the senses.
