The whole round form is a head, and the hole is the mouth. Amusingly, because this person is a really good communicator, Nesbert has represented the mouth as being really big relative to the head!
There is something deeply satisfying about its ample rounded simplicity of form. It feels generous and organic, almost soft perhaps, even though the stone is actually very hard. Nesbert has sanded the surface super-smooth, so it is beautiful to touch as well as to look at.
We encouraged Nesbert to diversify away from his favourite material, springstone, and use this gorgeous stone instead. It’s a very hard type of serpentine from northern Zimbabwe, with fascinating internal structure. Amazingly, those striking green, yellow and black veins in the stone are entirely natural, they are not flaws or lines of weakness.
